Overview
A coagulation panel measures clotting times and indices (PT, INR, APTT). It is important for assessing the risk of bleeding and thrombosis.
Why it's done
It is ordered before surgery, to monitor anticoagulant therapy (e.g. warfarin) and when a bleeding disorder is suspected.
How to prepare
No special preparation is usually needed; tell your doctor about all medications you take.
What to expect
A venous blood draw.
Understanding the results
A prolonged PT/INR indicates an increased bleeding risk. In patients on anticoagulants, the INR must stay within a target range that the doctor monitors.
