Overview
A lipid profile includes total cholesterol, LDL ("bad"), HDL ("good") and triglycerides. These values help assess the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Why it's done
It is ordered as a routine check after age 40, when cardiovascular risk factors are present and to monitor lipid-lowering therapy.
How to prepare
Fasting for 9–12 hours is recommended (especially for an accurate triglyceride measurement).
What to expect
A single venous blood draw.
Understanding the results
A high HDL and a low LDL are desirable. Target values depend on overall risk and are set individually with a cardiologist.
