Overview
Liver tests include enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT), bilirubin and albumin. Abnormal values can indicate liver damage or a problem with the bile ducts.
Why it's done
It is ordered when hepatitis is suspected, during long-term medication use, with alcohol use, or for unexplained fatigue or jaundice.
How to prepare
Light fasting is often recommended; avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
What to expect
A standard venous blood draw.
Understanding the results
Raised ALT/AST points to liver-cell damage, while raised ALP/GGT points to a bile-duct problem. Results should be assessed by a gastroenterologist.
