What does the test measure?

Measures a fibrin breakdown product that is used in algorithms for evaluating blood clots (thrombosis).

Why is it ordered?

When thrombosis is clinically suspected, as part of a dedicated risk assessment algorithm.

How should I prepare?

  1. Tell your doctor if you take anticoagulants or other medicines that affect blood clotting.
  2. Tell your doctor and the laboratory about all medicines, especially those that affect blood clotting. Do not change your treatment on your own.
  3. Do not stop any medicines on your own; if needed, note the time of your last dose.
  4. The blood sample is collected by a specialist; correct tube filling and sample handling are essential.

Do I need to fast?

Fasting is generally not required. If another test has been ordered at the same time, the overall preparation plan may change.

When should the test be done?

A specific time is generally not required. If your doctor has set a different time, follow those instructions.

What can affect the result?

  • Age, pregnancy, infection and inflammation
  • Surgery or injury
  • Pretest clinical probability of thrombosis

Which sample is needed?

Venous blood, citrate tube

How is the sample collected and stored?

The blood sample is collected by a qualified staff member. The tube type, required volume, and processing and storage conditions are set by the laboratory's specific method. You do not need to store the sample yourself.

What does the result mean?

A raised D-dimer is nonspecific and does not by itself confirm thrombosis; in properly selected patients, a negative result is used in an algorithm to rule it out.

When should I see a doctor?

If you have unusual bleeding, marked swelling, chest pain or shortness of breath, contact a doctor immediately; if symptoms are severe, seek emergency care.

Important warnings and recommendations

D-dimer should not be used to diagnose thrombosis without considering the clinical probability.
