What does the test measure?
The HPV PCR test detects the virus’s DNA and identifies high-risk strains (including types 16 and 18) responsible for most cases of cervical cancer.
Why is it ordered?
It is used in cervical-cancer screening, alongside or instead of the PAP test, usually from age 30.
How should I prepare?
Avoid intercourse, vaginal medications and douching for 24–48 hours before sampling. The test is taken on non-menstrual days.
How is the sample collected and stored?
A gynaecologist takes a sample from the cervix; the procedure is brief and usually painless.
What does the result mean?
A positive result means high-risk HPV is present and requires further evaluation (colposcopy, cytology). A positive test is not a cancer diagnosis — it assesses risk.
