What does the test measure?

Evaluates semen volume and sperm count, motility and morphology.

Why is it ordered?

To evaluate male reproductive function and semen parameters.

How should I prepare?

  1. Check in advance the required period of sexual abstinence (often 2–7 days) and the time limit for delivering the sample.
  2. Wash your hands and genitals before collection; use only an approved container.
  3. Collect the entire ejaculate; if any part is lost, be sure to tell the laboratory.
  4. Deliver it promptly, do not chill it, and do not use a regular condom or lubricant.

Do I need to fast?

Fasting is not required. The main requirement is to follow the agreed period of sexual abstinence and the sample collection rules.

When should the test be done?

Agree on the drop-off time in advance so that the laboratory's allowed interval between collection and delivery is met.

What can affect the result?

  • Length of sexual abstinence
  • Fever in the preceding weeks
  • Incomplete collection, chilling or delayed transport of the sample

Which sample is needed?

Ejaculate

How is the sample collected and stored?

The entire sample must be collected in a sterile container approved by the laboratory. If any part is lost, be sure to tell the staff. Sexual abstinence of 2–7 days and prompt delivery of the sample are usually required; agree on the exact time and transport conditions in advance. Do not chill the sample.

What does the result mean?

Volume, concentration, motility and morphology are interpreted together. A single semen analysis cannot give a final answer about fertility.

When should I see a doctor?

If the result shows changes, discuss it with a urologist or andrologist. A single semen analysis does not give a final conclusion; the specialist will decide whether a repeat test is needed.

Important warnings and recommendations

If part of the sample is lost, be sure to tell the laboratory; the collection time and length of abstinence must be recorded.
