What does the test measure?

Measures the total concentration of calcium in the blood.

Why is it ordered?

To evaluate calcium metabolism, bone health and parathyroid function.

How should I prepare?

  1. Check in advance whether you need to fast or have your blood drawn at a specific time.
  2. Not every biochemistry test needs special preparation. Check whether fasting is required for your specific order.
  3. Before the blood draw, avoid unusually intense physical exercise unless your doctor has advised otherwise.
  4. Tell your doctor and the laboratory staff about any medicines and dietary supplements you take.

Do I need to fast?

Fasting is often not necessary for this test alone. If other tests have also been ordered, or your doctor has prescribed specific preparation, follow the agreed rules.

When should the test be done?

A specific time is generally not required. If your doctor has set a different time, follow those instructions.

What can affect the result?

  • Albumin level (for total calcium)
  • Vitamin D and calcium supplements
  • Sample handling and pH (for ionized calcium)

Which sample is needed?

Venous blood — serum or plasma, depending on the method

How is the sample collected and stored?

The blood sample is collected by a qualified staff member. The tube type, required volume, and processing and storage conditions are set by the laboratory's specific method. You do not need to store the sample yourself.

What does the result mean?

High or low calcium may be linked to hormonal, kidney and other conditions; albumin also affects total calcium.

When should I see a doctor?

If your result is outside the reference interval, you have symptoms, or your condition changes, contact your doctor. If symptoms are severe or develop quickly, seek emergency care.

Important warnings and recommendations

Albumin affects how total calcium is interpreted; in some situations ionized calcium is needed.
