What does the test measure?

Measures the protein that carries iron; used to evaluate iron metabolism.

Why is it ordered?

To evaluate iron transport and iron deficiency and to distinguish it from other anemias.

How should I prepare?

  1. Check in advance whether you need to fast or have your blood drawn at a specific time.
  2. When iron tests are done together, agree in advance on the time of the blood draw and whether you need to fast. Do not stop iron supplements on your own.
  3. Before the blood draw, avoid unusually intense physical exercise unless your doctor has advised otherwise.
  4. Tell your doctor and the laboratory staff about any medicines and dietary supplements you take.

Do I need to fast?

In some cases fasting is needed, in others it is not. Check your specific order with your doctor and the laboratory.

When should the test be done?

A specific time is generally not required. If your doctor has set a different time, follow those instructions.

What can affect the result?

  • Food, hydration or physical exercise, depending on the specific analyte
  • Certain medicines or dietary supplements
  • Hemolysis and delayed sample processing

Which sample is needed?

Venous blood — serum or plasma, depending on the method

How is the sample collected and stored?

The blood sample is collected by a qualified staff member. The tube type, required volume, and processing and storage conditions are set by the laboratory's specific method. You do not need to store the sample yourself.

What does the result mean?

A raised transferrin often accompanies iron deficiency; a low level may be linked to inflammation or changes in protein production.

When should I see a doctor?

If your result is outside the reference interval, you have symptoms, or your condition changes, contact your doctor. If symptoms are severe or develop quickly, seek emergency care.

Important warnings and recommendations

Do not stop treatment on your own. Confirm the final test conditions with the laboratory.
